Keep your dishwasher running smoothly and eliminate odors with these three easy steps:
Step 1: Clean the Exterior
- Plastic Exterior: Use a sponge with hot, soapy water to wipe down the surface.
- Stainless Steel Exterior:
- Use a cleaner specifically designed for stainless steel or glass cleaner.
- Spray the cleaner onto a microfiber cloth (not directly on the dishwasher) to avoid damaging electronic controls.
- Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, or abrasive pads to prevent scratches.
- Seal Between Door and Tub: Clean this area with a rag to remove residue and food particles that cause odors or mold.
Step 2: Clear the Filter and Spray Arm
- Filter:
- Pull out the bottom rack and remove the filter system.
- Disassemble and rinse each part under water, using a brush for stubborn debris.
- Clean filters every couple of months.
- Spray Arm:
- Remove and rinse under a faucet.
- Clear clogged holes with a toothpick or skewer.
- Check additional spray holes (on the underside of some spray arms) for blockages.
Step 3: Sanitize and Deodorize
- Use a citric-acid-based cleaner (e.g., Affresh or Finish) to remove discoloration and odors.
- Follow product instructions to run an empty wash cycle with the cleaner in the detergent dispenser.
- For severe mineral deposits caused by hard water, consider:
- A cleaner designed for hard-water stains.
- Adding regeneration salt to your dishwasher’s water-softening system to prevent buildup and improve cleaning.
Bonus Tips
- Frequency: Clean the dishwasher interior every 1–2 months or as needed.
- For Hard Water Areas: Use dishwasher cleaners regularly to combat mineral deposits.
- Maintenance: Inspect seals and spray arms routinely to prevent clogs and leaks.
Regular cleaning will keep your dishwasher fresh, efficient, and odor-free for years!
