How to Calculate Water Tank Capacity in Liters

On February 25, 2026  By newsroom   Topic: India Home Advice

Calculating the capacity of a water tank in liters depends on its shape. Here's how to determine the volume for both rectangular and cylindrical tanks:

Rectangular Water Tank

  • Measure Dimensions:
  • Length (L)
  • Width (W)
  • Height (H)

  • Calculate Volume:

  • Formula: Volume = L × W × H
  • Units: Ensure measurements are in meters to get volume in cubic meters (m³).

  • Convert to Liters:

  • 1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters
  • Capacity in Liters: Volume (m³) × 1,000

Example:
- Length = 2 meters
- Width = 1 meter
- Height = 0.5 meters

Calculation:
- Volume = 2 m × 1 m × 0.5 m = 1 m³
- Capacity = 1 m³ × 1,000 = 1,000 liters

Cylindrical Water Tank

  • Measure Dimensions:
  • Diameter (D)
  • Height (H)

  • Calculate Radius:

  • Radius (R) = Diameter ÷ 2

  • Calculate Volume:

  • Formula: Volume = × R² × H
  • Units: Ensure measurements are in meters to get volume in cubic meters (m³).

  • Convert to Liters:

  • 1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters
  • Capacity in Liters: Volume (m³) × 1,000

Example:
- Diameter = 1.12 meters
- Height = 1 meter

Calculation:
- Radius = 1.12 m ÷ 2 = 0.56 m
- Volume = × (0.56 m)² × 1 m 0.984 m³
- Capacity = 0.984 m³ × 1,000 984 liters

By following these formulas, you can accurately determine the capacity of your water tank in liters.
