Why do they censor good movies?

I am watching "Apocalypto" on Star Movies and the stupid beasts have censored the fine movie, destroying much of the visceral impact of the story.

No slashed throats.
No head severed.
No grave bodily injuries.

They did a similar botch up act on Tarantino's "Kill Bill 1 and 2".

On the other hand, Steven Spielberg refused to have a single cut to his "Saving Private Ryan" and last time I watched it on TV, I did not notice any cuts. Luckily, I saw "Apocalypto" when it was shown in the theatres in 2007, and that time around, the censorship was minimal. I know the argument about "excessive violence" but sometimes art demands truth. "Apocalyto" is set in a violent time.

On the flip side, I hated the hindi movie "Jodha Akbar". History tells you most empires are built over rivers of blood. There is simply no blood in the movie. A weak movie, that one. I had hoped for better fare from the Director of "Lagaan" and "Swadesh".
