Prop 8 Reactions: What next?

On August 6, 2010 By topicguide Topic: Civil Liberties,

As was expected, when a Federal Judge ruled that Proposition 8 — the voter initiative that amended the California Constitution to define marriage as heterosexual — is unconstitutional, reactions were divided along ideological lines. While there was the expected euphoria and relief among the liberal-minded people, the right-wing, conservative people seemed angry that openly gay federal judge presided over the case, rather than recusing himself. The other common right-wing view about homosexuality has been that marriage between a man and woman is the bedrock of society.

The Wall Street Journal predicts that the same-sex marriage ruling will stand.

... we are prepared to offer up a prediction: When the Supreme Court takes upPerry v. Schwarzenegger--perhaps under the name Brown v. Perry or Whitman v. Perry--the justices will rule 5-4, in a decision written by Justice Kennedy, that there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

The New York Times says that Gay Marriage Ruling a Challenge for Both Parties

Republicans said that dwelling on the issue could become a distraction in the effort to win back the House or Senate from Democrats this fall. ...This election needs to revolve around five issues: taxes, spending, the economy, jobs and debt

The Times also says that the Democrats are in a spot ,

...since President Obama, whose aides had to explain in the wake of the decision that the president supported equal gay rights but opposed marriage rights for gay men and lesbians.
