Charles Duhigg's book is about how companies use the science of habit formation to study, and influence, what we buy - think timely coupons.
The main idea from this book:
1. Habits make up 40% of our daily routine.
2. The process of habit-formation inside our brains is a three-step loop.
- First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which behavior to use.
- Then there is the routine, which can be physical or mental or emotional.
- Finally, there is the reward
3. How to deal with bad habits: Attack the behaviors you think of as addictions by modifying the habits surrounding them.
This has been shown, in clinical studies, to be one of the most effective modes of treatment.
- Identify the routine
- Experiment with rewards
- Isolate the cue
- Have a plan
Note: the part about dealing with bad habits is not dealt with properly in this book. Most examples are about organizations. But, the idea is to idetify and attack bad habits.
