How to Set Up a Turntable

On February 16, 2025 By newsroom Topic: Technology Buyers Guide

Setting up a turntable properly ensures optimal sound quality and prolongs the life of your records and player. Follow these 8 steps to get your turntable ready to spin!

1. Make Sure the Turntable Is Level

  • Choose a Stable Spot: Place the turntable on a vibration-free surface, away from subwoofers or jumping kids.
  • Check for Leveling: Use bubble levels or a dedicated turntable level (~$25–$30). Adjust feet or place shims under the legs until the turntable is flat in all directions.
  • Final Check: Place the level diagonally for added accuracy.

2. Install the Cartridge

  • Check Preinstallation: Some turntables come with a pre-installed cartridge. If not, follow these steps:
  • Attach the cartridge to the tonearm headshell using screws or bolts. Tighten gently to prevent movement but avoid overtightening.
  • Connect the color-coded wires (red, green, white, blue) from the tonearm to the cartridge pins. Use fingers or tweezers, applying light pressure.
  • Pro Tip: Leave the stylus guard on during installation to protect the needle.

3. Set the Tracking Force

  • Why It Matters: Proper tracking force ensures the stylus sits correctly in the groove without skipping or wearing out prematurely.
  • Steps:
  • Float the tonearm by adjusting the counterweight until the arm balances horizontally.
  • Set the tracking force ring to "0."
  • Adjust the counterweight to the recommended force (refer to your manual).
  • Use a digital tracking force gauge (~$20–$30) for precision.

4. Align the Cartridge

  • Why Alignment Is Key: Proper alignment reduces wear on records and improves sound.
  • Use a Protractor:
  • Place the alignment protractor on the spindle.
  • Align the stylus with the protractor’s target points and ensure the cartridge is parallel to the grid lines.
  • Adjust the cartridge position by loosening screws if needed.
  • Recheck Tracking Force: After aligning, confirm the tracking force remains accurate.

5. Set the Anti-Skating Force

  • Purpose: Prevents the stylus from pressing unevenly in the groove.
  • Adjust Accordingly:
  • Match the anti-skating force to the tracking force (e.g., 2 grams for both).
  • Use the turntable’s anti-skating mechanism—either a string and weight system, a dial, or a slider.

6. Adjust the Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA)

  • Goal: The stylus should sit perpendicular to the groove while the tonearm is parallel to the record.
  • How to Adjust:
  • Loosen the set screw at the tonearm base to raise or lower the back of the arm.
  • Fine-tune by listening to an album:
    • Lowering increases bass.
    • Raising enhances treble.

7. Set the Azimuth

  • What It Does: Ensures the stylus is perfectly vertical in the groove, balancing the left and right audio channels.
  • Steps:
  • Loosen the azimuth adjustment screw at the tonearm pivot.
  • Rotate the tonearm until the stylus is perpendicular to the record.
  • Use an azimuth gauge or a magnifying glass to confirm.
  • Advanced Tip: Test discs with tones or azimuth analyzers can help fine-tune.

8. Recheck the Tracking Force

  • Final Check: Ensure everything is in place, and tracking force is accurate. This step prevents future issues and ensures high-quality playback.

Optional Gear for Enhanced Setup:

  • Anti-vibration pads or feet: Reduce unwanted resonance.
  • Digital tracking force gauge: For precise VTF measurements.
  • Alignment protractor: Many turntables include one, or download free versions online.

Now, Play Your Records!

Your turntable is ready to deliver warm, analog sound. Pair it with great headphones or speakers, and enjoy the unique experience of vinyl records.
