Front-load washers are efficient, but their design can make them prone to mold. Follow these steps to reduce mold and keep your washer fresh:
Combat Residue
- Use HE (high-efficiency) detergent and avoid regular detergents, which can create excess suds and leave soap scum.
- Opt for HE powder detergents, which leave less residue than liquid detergents.
- Skip fabric softeners, which can contribute to buildup.
Remove Laundry Promptly
- Transfer wet clothes to the dryer immediately after the cycle ends to prevent moisture from lingering.
Wipe the Door and Gasket
- After each wash, dry the inside of the door and clean the rubber gasket.
- Pull back the gasket gently to remove trapped items (like socks) and wipe away moisture.
Leave the Door Open
- Keep the washer door ajar or fully open between loads to allow airflow and moisture evaporation.
- If young children are present, lock the laundry room to prevent accidents.
Clean the Detergent Drawer
- Remove and rinse the drawer regularly to remove soap buildup.
- Let it air dry or leave it open between uses to prevent moisture buildup.
Run a Tub-Clean Cycle
- Perform a tub-clean cycle every month or after 50 wash loads (follow your washer’s manual).
- If unavailable, run a hot-water cycle with a washing machine cleaner containing bleach.
Check Washer Leveling
- Ensure the washer is level front-to-back and side-to-side to allow proper water drainage.
- Adjust the feet as needed and tighten the lock nuts securely.
Inspect the Drain Hose
- Ensure the hose is not too long and inserted only 6–8 inches into the drain pipe to avoid siphoning dirty water back into the washer.
By sticking to these practices, you can enjoy a cleaner, mold-free washing machine!
