Clothes moths can wreak havoc on your wardrobe, especially items made of natural fibers like wool and cashmere. Follow these effective, pesticide-free methods to eliminate moths and protect your clothes:
Look for Damage:
- Check garments in bright light or with a flashlight for:
- Holes: Irregular and asymmetrical.
- Frass: Small pellets of insect larvae excrement.
- Larvae or Eggs: Small white caterpillars or cream-colored pinhead-sized eggs.
Inspect Common Infestation Areas:
- Craft drawers, rugs, pianos, cracks in floors, and anywhere hair, fur, or lint collects.
Clean
- Dry Clean: Heat and solvents kill larvae and eggs.
- Hand-Wash: Use a detergent for wool, but avoid machine-washing delicate wool items.
Freeze
- Seal items in airtight bags and freeze for at least 72 hours at below -20°F.
- Let items defrost fully before removing from bags to prevent fiber brittleness.
Heat
- Use a dryer on the hottest setting for 30 minutes.
- Avoid delicate items like fine wool that may be damaged by heat.
Vacuum Thoroughly
- Use a crevice tool to clean baseboards, closets, cracks in floors, and drawers.
- Add baking soda, baby powder, or diatomaceous earth to the vacuum to destroy eggs and larvae inside the bag or canister.
Seal and Clean
- Don’t return clothes to closets until they’re vacuumed and cleaned.
Store Properly:
- Wrap cleaned clothes in acid-free paper or place them in airtight plastic totes or vacuum-sealed bags.
- Turn clothes inside out to minimize visible yellowing during long-term storage.
Prevent Re-Infestation:
- Regular Maintenance: Dry clothes in the dryer or freeze them monthly to kill eggs.
- Brush and Shake: Inspect clothes before storing them away.
Avoid Ineffective or Harmful Methods:
- Skip Natural Repellents: Cedar, lavender, and vinegar are ineffective. Cedar oil may even damage wool.
- Avoid Mothballs: Toxic fumes can harm humans and pets.
Monitor:
- Place sticky pheromone traps in your closet to detect male moths. Spotting one indicates a potential infestation.
By acting quickly and following these steps, you can effectively eliminate clothes moths and protect your wardrobe from further damage.
