How to Free Up Storage on Your Phone: iPhone & Android

On February 16, 2025 By newsroom Topic: Technology Buyers Guide

Running out of phone storage can be frustrating, but you don’t need to delete precious memories or apps right away. Here’s how to reclaim space on your iPhone or Android device effectively.

1. Check Your Storage Usage

On Android

  • Steps:
  • Go to Settings > Storage (or Battery and device care > Storage on Samsung).
  • View categories like apps, images, and videos.
  • Tap a category to delete unnecessary files or reset apps.
  • Pro Tip: Use the “Free up space” button for quick cleanup.

On iPhone

  • Steps:
  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  • View a color-coded chart of storage usage by category.
  • Review suggestions like optimizing photos or deleting large message attachments.
  • Pro Tip: Tap on apps to delete or off-load them to save space while keeping user data.

2. Optimize Your Storage

Photos and Videos

  • Android:
  • Use Files by Google to delete junk files, screenshots, or old downloads.
  • Consider moving photos to an SD card if your phone supports it.

  • iPhone:

  • Enable Optimize iPhone Storage under Settings > Photos. Full-resolution images will save to iCloud, while smaller versions remain on your phone.

Manual Cleanup: Delete blurry or duplicate photos to avoid saving unnecessary files.

3. Clear Your Cache

  • Android:
  • Go to Settings > Storage > Apps.
  • Select an app and choose Clear Cache to remove temporary files without losing settings.
  • iPhone:
  • For Safari, go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.
  • Other browsers, like Chrome, have similar options in their settings.

4. Delete Old Files and Downloads

  • Check the Downloads folder in the Files or My Files app on both Android and iPhone.
  • Smart Storage (Google Pixel): Automatically removes backed-up photos/videos older than 60 days.

5. Manage Music, Podcasts, and Messages

  • Delete locally stored songs or switch to streaming services.
  • For messages:
  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and choose 30 Days or 1 Year instead of forever.
  • Use the “Review Large Attachments” option to delete bulky files.

6. Pare Down Your Apps

  • Identify unused apps:
  • Android: Check “Last used” in Settings > Apps.
  • iPhone: Review storage usage in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

  • Off-loading Apps (iPhone): Removes the app but retains data. Redownload later to pick up where you left off.

7. Use an SD Card (If Available)

  • Expand storage with an SD card (Android only).
  • Transfer photos, videos, and some apps to the card.
  • Note: Moving apps to an SD card may disable some widgets or icons.

Final Tips

  • Regular Maintenance: Make it a habit to clear junk files and remove unused apps.
  • Cloud Services: Use Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox for backups.
  • Be Proactive: Avoid waiting for a “Storage Almost Full” warning!

With these steps, you’ll enjoy a decluttered phone and plenty of space for your essentials.
