How To Create a Hit in Seven Easy Steps

On October 25, 2016 By thesuccessmanual Topic: Remarkable, Howto

How do we create a hit out of our project, business or even our career? Here is a quick rundown of things that may help.

This guide belongs to 100 Ways To Be Being Remarkable Series, a special project that brings you business and self-development advice from The Success Manual.

1. Be unique
Because the world is chock full of yet-anothers - Digg clones, Facebook clones, Google wannabes, Techcrunch Hit blog aspirants, Harry Potter type fantasies...you get the idea.

2. Be the best at what you do
The difference between #1 and #2 in any industry is growing wider in all the fields. Google is way, way ahead of #2 search engine. I do not even know what #2 is!. Facebook towers over all social networking sites. I guess the earlier marketing adage of top 2 players in any industry cornering 80% of the market is a bit, huh?. Now, #1 holds 80% of the market!

3. Create your own personality
Do something bold and outrageous. Do anything to stand out from the crowd. What is the fun in being the next Brad Pitt? Soon the pretty boy image will wear off with age and you will be just another gym-hopping, pill-popping, soulless bland bod.

Jason Calacanis, however villainous he may be, makes sure people know him. Even I, who do not know him personally, but know enough about him to call him out - his dissing of SEOs to push his so-called Human-edited Search Engine, for example. Mahalo may be low on quality but Jason has managed to maintain its name nevertheless and has the funds to sustain ot for a longer run. Even infamy pays.

4. Look outside your field of interest
Copy hit ideas from other industries. They say most revolutionary ideas come from merging 2 fields. The hallmark of genius is taking inspiration from everywhere. For example, Henry Ford revolutionized car making by using assembly-line production. He got that from observing the meat-processing industry. A related tip is: Mix 2 or more hot trends and create your own hit.

5. Market your idea like anything
How do you get people to know about your revolutionary product? Come to think of it. You product does not have to be outstanding, but you must appear to be standing everywhere. A supremely untalented person such as Paris Hilton managed to appear at all the entertainment events and parties. She became ubiquitous.

Then there are guys like Guy Vaynerchuk , the wine seller who managed to use the rising power of social media to set himself up as a web celebrity. Lesson: Ride a rising star.

Mashable, the technology blog latches on to the latest rising social media star, Foursquare is the latest and Mashable covers it like anything, with low-quality content but it gets the pageviews nevertheless.

6. Create a close group of supporters
Seth Godin has written about Tribes, a dedicated small group of people who become fans and spread your word.

This is the circle of followers, friends, subscribers, customers, media outlets and others willing to hear our pitch. This is the group we tell about our new product, our new record, our upcoming big sale. We want more of their attention and more people on the list.

Once you are able to create this group of 10-20 people, you are on your way.

7. Persist
Try and Try again. Keep doing things. Did you know Flickr and Myspace started out as different projects but along the way, their founders discovered people using these services in different ways and they listened and adapted. As the saying goes, fortune favors the brave. And the busy.

By the time he was done, Edison had 1600 patents. He just never stopped working and experimenting.

An idea related to persistent is the 10000 hour rule, made famous by Malcolm Gladwell. According to this rule, it takes 10000 hours of practice before you really get adept at something.

So, get going, will ya?
