How to Calculate Square Feet of A Room?

On February 25, 2026  By newsroom   Topic: India Home Advice

Calculating the square footage of a room is essential for tasks like flooring, painting, or furnishing. Here's a simple guide to help you measure accurately:

  • Measure Length and Width: Use a measuring tape to determine the room's length and width in feet.

  • Calculate Square Footage: Multiply the length by the width to get the area in square feet. For example:

  • If a room is 15 feet long and 20 feet wide:

    • Area = 15 ft × 20 ft = 300 sq ft
  • For Irregularly Shaped Rooms:

  • Divide into Sections: Break the room into smaller rectangles or squares.
  • Measure Each Section: Determine the length and width of each section.
  • Calculate Individual Areas: Multiply length by width for each section.
  • Sum the Areas: Add all the section areas together for the total square footage.

  • Include Closets and Alcoves: Measure these areas separately and add their square footage to the total room area.

  • Convert Measurements if Needed: If measurements are in inches, yards, or meters, convert them to feet before calculating:

  • 1 inch = 0.0833 feet
  • 1 yard = 3 feet
  • 1 meter = 3.28084 feet

Accurate measurements ensure you purchase the right amount of materials and help in planning your space effectively. Happy measuring!
