WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging platforms in India, making it a prime target for scammers. These scams often exploit users' trust and lack of awareness to steal money, personal information, or access to accounts. Recognizing these scams and knowing how to protect yourself is critical in today's digital landscape.
Victims are asked to pay "registration fees" or "interview charges" to proceed.
Red Flags:
Poor grammar or generic job descriptions.
Example Message:
Victims are asked to share sensitive details like Aadhaar, PAN, or OTPs.
Red Flags:
Requests for OTPs or personal information.
Example Message:
Victims are asked to pay a "processing fee" or "tax" to claim their winnings.
Red Flags:
Requests for upfront payments or sensitive information.
Example Message:
Clicking the link can steal your login credentials, personal information, or even install malware on your phone.
Red Flags:
A sense of urgency to click immediately.

Sharing the OTP gives them access to your accounts, such as WhatsApp or payment apps.

Avoid Clicking Unknown Links:
Hover over links to check the URL, and don’t click if it looks suspicious.
Never Share Sensitive Information:
Do not share OTPs, personal details, or financial information over WhatsApp.
Double-Check Before Sending Money:
If a friend or relative asks for money, confirm their identity by calling them directly.
Report and Block Scammers:
Use WhatsApp’s "Report" and "Block" features to stop scammers.
Enable Two-Step Verification on WhatsApp:
Protect your account with a PIN by enabling this feature in WhatsApp’s settings.
Verify Authenticity of QR Codes and Payment Links:
Never scan QR codes or click payment links unless you’re certain of their legitimacy.
