Why do elite schools exist?

On August 5, 2010 By futureofeducation Topic: Colleges and Universities,

The quote below reminds me of movies like "Dead Poets Society" or "Scent of a Woman", in its skewering of the nature of elite schools of the world. Why do elite schoos exist?

"There’s a reason elite schools speak of training leaders, not thinkers—holders of power, not its critics."

So true. Education, aka 'the delivery of knowledge' is about power. Why? Because knowledge is power, it is a cliche, no?
