Indian Air Traffic and Air Safety Facts

Did you know that the Delhi Airport saw an increase in traffic of almost 10 times in 7 years? In the context of yesterday's horrific air crash in Mangalore, some facts:

 

Dangerous Indian Air Space: In reply to an RTI reply to Abhishek Shukla, the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) disclosed that it was investigating 15 near misses in Indian skies in the year 2009.

 

Burgeoning Air Traffic: On an average day, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) at Delhi handles over 700 flights,carrying more than 62,000 passengers. In 2002-03, IGIA was handling only 77 flights a day.

 

Drunk Pilots: In its RTA reply, the DGCA also revelaed that in 2009, a total number of 42 alcohol-positive cases (among pilots) were detected.
