A simpleguide to the Mumbai Terror attacks 2008

It is 4-30 PM here in India as I write this post and the terrorists are still inside the Oberoi Hotel. Some have called the attacks as the coming of age of Urban Jihad in India with the Armed forces and police fighting building by building, floor by floor in the heart of the financial capital of India.

Here are my observation on key facst of the terror attacks so far:

Quote: “They were talking about British and Americans specifically...“There was an Italian guy, who, you know, they said, ‘Where are you from?’ and he said he’s from Italy, and they said, ‘Fine,’ and they left him alone.”

Places attacked: luxury hotels (The Taj, Oberoi, Ramada), a popular restaurant (Cafe Leopold) and a crowded train station (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus), a Maternity hospital (Cama Hospital) and headquarters of the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch.

In Numbers: 101 people dead - 5 Cops (including the head of the Anti Terror Cell of Mumbai police), 6 Foreigners 5 terrorists; 300+ injured; 3 Indian M.P.s and one additional Secretary in the Union Government in the Taj Hotel when the terrorists arrived uninvited. As of 3-30 PM 1 terrorist has been captured while 9 other suspected people have been detained.

Fallout: Mumbai shut down - stock markets, schools, offices in the downtown area, all closed; Police urging everyone to stay inside; England Cricket team to return home (already lost the ODI series); T20 Champions Trophy postponed if not cancelled.

Weird fallout: Lawyers abstain from work in protest of Mumbai terror attacks

Who is behind it: 20-25 year old young men, having supposedly done a course on MTA (Master of Terrorist Attacks) from Deccan Mujahiddin, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Al Qaeda, Someone in Pakistan; Hindu terrorists; disgruntled Gujarati Muslims...at this time, your guess is as good as mine

How did the terrorists arrive?: By sea. Strangely, Indian\\\'s premier sea front is not patrolled, so it seems. Attack almost similar to the terrorist attack on Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar in 2002 when 34 people were killed and 81 injured.

Present situation: More than 21 hours into the Nightmare. Terrorists holding around 40 people as hostage in the Oberoi hotel, the fight rages on.
