George Lakoff, a cognitive linguist, once said that the voter votes in his self-identity instead of his self-interest. This article in the TOI quotes two researchers saying much the same thing - Indians are voting more based on their identities shaped by things like caste than what is good for them and less than one-third are impressed by personalities. This is a growing phase after all.
